Porcelain & Light

My Design philosophy

My porcelain work has involved ways of experimenting with high fired porcelain and light. The nature of porcelain to be translucent when highly fired allows for endless possibilities to explore surface textures and the way light travels through and within the works. Each porcelain piece is individually textured to reveal the nature of both the porcelain and light in the play of light and shadow.

My Inspiration

My inspiration comes from the nature of translucent porcelain and the many possibilities to explore the use of light as part of the work. Surface textures enhance the work as well as give varying thicknesses to the work which in turn allows for a varience in the translucent qualities and the play of light.

My Materials

I have been using Southern Ice Porcelain for some time now for its purity and strength. As I use little or no glaze on the surface I find the high fired unglazed surface is softened by the textures I apply. The textures are applied by hand or by impressing natural or fabricated materials into the clay during the making process. The porcelain is then fired in an electric kiln to between 1250 -1280C to acheive translucency.
